EUDR: deforestation-free traceability becomes product data
The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) has applied to large and medium companies since 30 December 2025, with a six-month grace period on enforcement. It covers seven commodities — cocoa, coffee, soy, palm oil, cattle, rubber and wood — and a long list of derived products.
For food & beverage, it turns ingredient origin into regulated data: every batch must be proven deforestation-free after 31 December 2020, down to the plot of land.
Plot-level geolocation, the new standard of proof
The EUDR no longer accepts a supplier attestation alone. Every commodity must be tied to the geolocation coordinates of its production plots, cross-checked against satellite data to confirm no deforestation occurred after the cut-off date.
For a recipe containing cocoa or palm oil, that means tracing the chain back to the source farms — a depth of traceability few product repositories handle today.
A due-diligence statement per placement on the market
Each operator must file a Due Diligence Statement (DDS) in the Commission's information system and keep its reference number. That number then travels down the chain: your customer will ask for it, and you must obtain it from your suppliers.
In practice, the information "where does this ingredient come from and what proves its compliance" must travel with the product data, not in an inbox.
The risk: scattered origin data
The challenge is not regulatory, it is documentary. Origins, certificates, plot coordinates and DDS numbers often live in separate files, per supplier, disconnected from the recipe sheet. At the first audit, rebuilding the evidence becomes a project.
What this means for your product data
EUDR compliance is a data-graph problem: linking each affected ingredient to its origin, its plot, its proof and its DDS number, then propagating that chain up to the finished product.
A PLM that treats origin and traceability as first-class ingredient attributes lets you flag exposed recipes in one click, attach the evidence and block any market placement without a valid DDS. That is exactly crumble-ai's approach: upstream traceability is living product data, not a binder.
